Dr. Glenis Benson is a world-renowned Autism Spectrum Conditions consultant who takes a kinder, gentler approach that embraces individuals with ASCs so they know they are valued and loved. Throughout her career, whether in autism spectrum condition consulting, speech language pathology or education, she has been committed to supporting people with respect and compassion.
Dr. Benson's research has focused on communication in Autistics, specifically pragmatic abilities.
Unexpected behaviours, very often are the result of a less than conventional, or less than effective communication system.
People without conventional or effective expressive and receptive communication systems will often engage in unexpected behaviours. "Children will do well if they can," as Ross Greene reminds us. Recommended strategies will typically assess for skill deficits and teach replacement behaviours.
With a focus on communication skills, and practical strategies, consulting offers real, working solutions that are much needed for the present moment.
Being a health consultant is being an activist. We must continue to advocate for better training for personnel, improved understanding of Autism, and R E S P E C T for all involved.
As well as presenting nearly annually at ASHA, offering workshops for school districts and autism organizations, Dr. Benson is also a founding board member of Camp AweSum, a camp for youth and their families who experience ASC.
"Camp has allowed me to witness family dynamics, train parents and support personnel in the use of visuals, and a kinder, gentler philosophy as well as embrace individuals with ASDs so they know they are valued and loved. You will find that I am committed to supporting people in the most respectful way possible with compassion for the individual, their family and their educators."
